The content of aluminum in the crust is second only to oxygen and silicon, ranking third, and is the most abundant metal element in the crust. The development of the three important industries of aviation, construction, and automobiles requires the characteristics of materials to have the unique properties of aluminum and its alloys, which greatly facilitates the production and application of this new metal aluminum. The application is extremely wide.
So what are the characteristics of pure aluminum?
1. Low density and can be strengthened
The density of pure aluminum is close to 2700kg/m3, which is about 35% of the density of iron. The strength of pure aluminum can be more than doubled by cold working, and it can be alloyed by adding magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, silicon, lithium, scandium and other elements, and then further strengthened by heat treatment. Its specific strength is comparable to that of high-quality alloy steel.
2. Easy to process
Aluminum is cast by any casting method. Aluminum has good plasticity and can be rolled into thin plates and foils; drawn into tubes and filaments; extruded into various civil profiles; it can be machined, milled, bored, and planed at the maximum speed that most machine tools can reach.
3. Corrosion resistance and good electrical and thermal conductivity
On the surface of aluminum and its alloys, a dense and strong Al2O3 protective film is easy to form. This protective film can only be destroyed by the intense action of halogen ions or alkali ions. Therefore, aluminum has good resistance to atmospheric (including industrial atmosphere and ocean vapor) corrosion and water corrosion. It can resist the corrosion of most acids and organics. It uses corrosion inhibitors to resist weak alkali corrosion. Protective measures can improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. The electrical and thermal conductivity of aluminum is inferior to silver, copper and gold.
4. No low temperature brittleness
Aluminum is below zero degrees Celsius. As the temperature decreases, the strength and plasticity will not decrease, but will increase.
5. Beautiful and highly reflective
The reflectivity of the polished aluminum surface to white light is more than 80%. The higher the purity, the higher the reflectivity. At the same time, aluminum has good reflection properties for infrared, ultraviolet, electromagnetic waves, and heat radiation. Aluminum and its alloys have a silver-white luster due to their strong reflective ability. After machining, it can reach very high finish and brightness. After anodizing and coloring, colorful and dazzling aluminum products can be obtained.
6. Non-magnetic, no sparks from impact
7. Sound absorbing
8. Resistance to radiation
